America's oldest man dies at 111; leaves behind secret of longevity

America's oldest man has died at 111.
According to the Daily Mail, Shelby Harris was 111 years old when he died on July 25, 2012. He outlived both of his wives and three daughters. He was a great-great-great-grandfather.
He was recently considered a supercentenarian; that is, one who has lived longer than 110 years. This age is achieved by about one in a thousand centenarians, that is those who have lived beyond 100 years.

Harris was born in 1901 in the Southern Indiana town of Ayrshire. He first worked as a coal miner before moving to the Quad Cities in 1942.

In an interview last March, Harris gave his advice for a long life. He said his secret to a long life was "to love people and believe in people."

Harris continued to say:
"I just try to live from day to day, I try to live the right kind of life. I try to live the truth. I love everybody and I want everybody to love me."
The Daily Mail reports Harris passed away comfortably in his sleep at the Rock Island Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Illinois where he has lived for the last six years. He lived on his own before moving to the center when he was 105. Administrator Dawn May said his health had deteriorated in the past few months.

It's one thing we can say for sure: Shelby Harris lived a long life.
The title of oldest man in the U.S. now belongs to James McCoubrey of San Francisco, who is set to turn 111 in September.
